Parish History

Christ the Divine Teacher was established on June 2, 1969.  The first Mass of the parish was celebrated in St. Mary Cemetery Chapel on June 7, 1969.  Until the church was built, Mass was celebrated in a local restaurant.  Ground for the church was broken on July 26, 1970.  The first Mass was celebrated in the new church on March 27, 1971, and the building was dedicated on May 31, 1971.  Additional work in the church was done in 1974, including the installation of the pews.  The church continues to serve the congregation.

However by the beginning of the 21st century it became obvious that the parish could no longer exist as an independent parish due to a drop of population in the area and a decrease in the number of priests in the diocese.  After a five year study, it was decided to merge Christ the Divine Teacher with three other parishes -- Divine Mercy and St Philomena in Beaver Falls and St. Rose of Lima in Darlington -- to form the new St. Monica Parish.  The merger took place on July 15, 2013.  Christ the Divine Teacher church remained opened to serve the new parish until a new church can be built.
