Parish History

St. Albert the Great was established on June 8, 1956.  The parish was founded in response to the growth of population in the South Hills.  The first Mass of the parish was celebrated on June 17 in the auditorium of McGibney School.  For the next two years the parish used the school auditorium for Sunday Masses while they purchased land for and constructed a combined church/school building.  Ground for the church/school building was broken on December 15, 1957, and construction began on December 30.  The completed building was dedicated on December 13, 1958.  The first floor of the building contained the church and the second floor comprised the school.

This church was only considered a temporary measure to be replaced by a permanent church.  However, the temporary church had to serve the parish for three decades as the parish had other financial commitments.  Beginning in 1986, the parish began making plans to build a new church.  Ground for the church was broken on April 1, 1990.  The cornerstone was laid on November 4, 1990, and the church was dedicated on January 13, 1991.
